THOMAS GREEN (1770-1842) married (1792 in Pittsylvania County, VA) AMY KEESEE (1776-1854). They brought their fine family from VA to Roane in 1811. He bought (E, p. 239) 50 acres from Lewis Kirkpatrick in Swan Pond, and later 100 acres on Emory River from Thomas Hall (E, p. 523). In 1826, Thomas Green was paying taxes on 372 acres, and his sons Theoderick and Bluford, were living nearby. Thomas' name appears in various records, but in general, he maintained a low profile. Thomas died in 1842, and Amy died in 1851. They are buried in the Swan Pond Methodist Church Cemetery.

General Notes: The Enoch Green family stood for the August, 1850 census of District 5, White County, Tennessee, and Enoch entered a homestead claim for land in Webber Township, Jefferson County, Illinois in November, 1851. Between these dates . . .

In about 1851, 45 year-old Enoch Green arrived in Illinois from White County, Tennessee, with his wife Isabella Edwards and three sons, Ellison Mercer age 20, Wiley age 16 and Bluford age 7, and two daughters, Elizabeth age 12 and Missouri age four.

Enoch's older brother William M Green had been in Illinois 20-some years at that point and may have been instrumental in Enoch's choice of Webber Township. Enoch settled along the south border of Webber as had William.

Enoch entered a claim for 200 acres of public land in November, 1851, exercising warrants. (Land data from Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales Database.)

It appears that transaction was voided and a new claim was entered for 160 acres in 1854. Notice Enoch retained the east half of the southwest quarter of section 36 and added the second half, thereby retaining any improvements he had made. This quarter section of land is immediately west of Mt Olive Church in southeastern Webber Township.

Enoch acquired another 120 acres of public land the following May. This addition is in Pendleton Township but contiguous to his home place.

Enoch's oldest son Ellison Mercer also entered a claim for 80 acres in 1854. He had married a neighbor girl Margaret Moore and started a family. Ellison's claim was two miles west of his dad's, in Pendleton Township.

(Two of Enoch Green's children, Ellison Mercer and Elizabeth, will marry two of neighbor Thomas Moore's children, Margaret and James.)

Thomas Moore and his brother Alexander would accumulate some 900 acres of public land proximate to or contiguous to Enoch Green's holdings. On a later plat map, much of this Moore land is held by Enoch Green's descendants.

Enoch married Isabella Edwards on Oct 20, 1830 in Roane County, TN. Isabella was born about 1813 in Tennessee and died after 1880 in Webber, Jefferson, IL.

From the 1860 census, Pendleton, John B and Emiline have four children between two and nine years old. They will have one more child born in 1860.

General Notes:

Isabelle Green's Father-in-law John J Bennett and his brother Andrew Wilson Bennett, recent settlers in Jefferson County, Illinois, each wrote letters to folks back home.

Their words paint a surprisingly full picture of daily routine life and the things that concern them. Don't miss the enthusiasm and command they apply to life and living in rural America in their time.

Nov 20, 1859 Letter

From Andrew Wilson Bennett to Oliver Perry Bennett [and others]

Dear brothers and sister,
It is with pleasure that I now write to you to let you know that we are all well at present, [and] hoping this may find you all the same. I do not know as I will finish this for several days, just so I get it done in time for the next mail day is all that I care for. I will now try to tell you what we have been doing this Fall.

We have made 100 kegs and 50 or 60 barrels. We have got our corn all in but 1/2 load and 40 or 60 shocks. We had 18 good loads. John [brother John?] is teaching school in our school house. He has got 25 scholars at $2.25 per scholar. I am getting wood, hauling fodder, 'and so the world wags.' [this is a quote from Shakespeare].

John Owens' wife has been very sick for the last few days, but is getting better. One of our neighbor's boys by the name of McClurg got his hand so badly mashed on a cane mill that it had to be cut off -- old slash. Gus, Josh [probably Joshua Simmons, a neighbor], Sam and Ed Barnett, Horn, Newton [probably John Newton, a neighbor], Flannegan, and Luke is all well and doing just about as they was when you were here.

We have had the prettiest Fall that I ever seen any place. It has been very dry and warm all this Fall. There has not been but 2 days that a man could not go in his shirt sleeves. It snowed on the 12th and 13th until the ground was covered 3 inches deep, but it all went off on the 14th and 15th. It is raining now, slowly. [Something about a puppy and George, Sis and ?]

Nov the 22d
It has been cloudy now for 3 days and it has not rained enough to wet my shirt. It is still warm enough to go barefooted. Newton sold his old oxen today for 50 = 00 [I think that's $50], so you can guess how cattle sells here. He also had 3 of his fattened hogs to die today. I think they have got the hog colic. If it is, it is the first that it has been in this neighborhood.

Oh, I had like to forgot to tell you who had joined the church here lately. Three of Newton's girls, Horn and wife, Jeff Baloo and wife, Mrs. Barnett, Nancy Owens -- All Cambellites now. Now when you here of me, ... you may know that hunting on Sunday will be stopped.

Now I want to ask a favor or two of you. I would like to know the reason that Asa nor Jim Beavers have not written. And why George [brother?] has quite writing. I have not got a letter from him for more than a year. I also would like to know what Bill Wilson is going to do. Amos Beavers [brother in law] has not written for some time. Tell him to write the first Sunday that he does not put in making gunsights. Tell Amos to try and arrange it so as to come out next Fall and help me gather one load of corn. We have beat all our neighbors this year as I have got 15 acres broke this Fall for corn. If I get to go to town tomorrow, I will not finish this but will get Philena to. No more to write about.

November the 24, 1859
From Philena Bennett to Hannah & Oliver Perry Bennett and all the rest,
Dear Sister and Brother,
I will now write a few lines to let you know that I am still alive yet, and have not forgot you. Yet it has been some time since we received your letter. I waited for Andy to write. He hates to write so bad he puts it off til the last minute. That is the reason we have not written before.

It is still cloudy and warm. I hant [haven't] got much to write, nor much time to write it in, for Andy [is] most ready to start to town. Andy sold 4 milk cows the other day for 45 dollars, one old cow and 3 heifers. [unreadable] all good cows. We give 25 dollars for the old cow three years ago. [It's] the way to make money when you can't do no better. I have sold 70 pound of butter this Summer and Fall. I got from 8 to 15 cents per pound - it is now 12. Eggs are 5 cents, coffee 3 pound to the dollar, and sugar 8 pound to the dollar. I have got most all my Winter work done up, but can get plenty of work from my neighbors when I want it.

Hannah, I want you to write and tell me what has become of Jim Arbuckle and Lanny [probably Lana as there is a James & Lana Arbuckle in Scott County IN 1860], if they are doing any good, and all the neighbors. I would like to hear from them all. I would like to see them all a heap better, but the Lord only knows when that will be. I hope it will be before long. I must now draw to a close. I hope to hear from you soon. No more.

1/1/1866 Letter from John J. Bennett to Oliver Perry Bennett

Excuse a short letter. Write soon. Hand this to some of Amos's folks.

January 1st 1866

Oliver Perry Bennett

Sir, I will take tonight to write you a few lines to let you know how we are & what we are doing. We are all well at this time. We have not had any chills for some time. I [think] we are done with them.

We are all well satisfied with our new home in the brush. We have got a good well of water that I think will never go dry. We have as good a fire place as I ever sat by. It is brick. I built it myself. I've got three good hogs to kill, yet I have not killed one. I have got two of the best sows that runs in this flat. I have only 3 pigs but they are good ones & I am looking for some soon. I have two good cows & two steer calves.

Tom & Brandy, George & Eck says they are going to have a yoke of oxen. I bought 4 sheep yesterday for $10. All my stock is good but my team is too old. Dick has bought 125 acres of land 1 mile east of me for $1,250, about 40 acres fenced, 200 young choice fruit trees, and a never failing spring. I think it a good bargain.

I have nothing worth writing or I would have wrote sooner. There is more game in these parts this Winter than has been for many years - deer & turkey. I don't hunt any so it does me no good. I have seen turkeys several times but I never have my gun.

Beathy has got most enough cotton spun for 12 yards of muslin. I am going to make us a loom this winter. I have got a draft of it. It will be 3 feet 7 inches wide, 4 feet 8 inches long, 2 feet 6 inches high. It won't take as much room as a bed stead.

I got a letter from William T. Beavers a week ago. I will write him soon.

General Notes: BLUFORD GREEN

In the fall Bluford GREEN would have his sons help him drive mules to the sale barns. Courtney rode a sorrel bald-faced Indian pony in front and the mules would follow single file as Jesse brought up the rear on his horse. They drove them to Stanton NORRIS' barn in Waltonville and to Al FINN's barn in Flora. Bluford GREEN also drove around the country buying colts in the Spring and selling them in the Fall. Ponies were shipped from the West by train and unloaded in the stockyards in Bluford. They were then auctioned off to the farmers and after much effort could be ridden and trained to work on the farm. Turkeys were also driven down the road to market in the Fall.

The town of Bluford was named after Bluford GREEN when he was a small boy as his father Wiley GREEN, was justice of the peace. Wiley took consumption after he returned from the Civil War and died at the age of 43. His wife, Manerva, had to raise the children and two grandchildren by herself.

There were lots of blackberries, apples, and wild game on the rail-fence farm. Grandmother GREEN could bake biscuits on her fireplace. The iron skillet had legs on it and sat down in the wood coals. It was the job of one of the girls to keep flies off the table with a tree limb as there were no screens on the windows or doors.

Bluford died when he was 44 with consumption and his wife, Gertrude POOLE GREEN had to raise the children by herself. The children were: Rubie, Courtney, Jesse, Mable and Everett.

The GREEN farm was southeast of Bluford and the children attended the Weatherspoon (Screamer) school. Rubie GREEN PEPPLE remembers riding to school on horseback and on cold days would turn the horse loose and he would go back home. The boys trapped for hides in the winter to make extra money when they weren't chopping wood for the stoves.

The Bluford and Wiley GREENS are buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Bluford where the old log church still stands. - Rubie PEPPLE

AN OLD-TIMEY BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH WHEREIN WE DISCOVER THE PARENTS OF GERTRUDE MAY POOLE GREEN, SPOUSE OF BLUFORD GREEN

Dr. Charles Judson Poole M.D.

The medical profession has a number of able representatives in the city of Mount Vernon, among whom is the well known and successful physician and surgeon whose name furnishes the caption of this sketch. Although younger than the majority of his compeers Doctor Poole made commendable progress in his chosen calling and now commands a very extensive practice which has been as successful financially as professionally and which is steadily growing in magnitude and importance.

He is a native of Jefferson County, Illinois, and the fourth of a family of five children whose parents. W. H. and Amelia Poole, were born in Tennessee and Illinois respectively, but who have spent their married life in Mount Vernon, where the father located in the year 186O.

W. H. Poole learned the trade of wagon making when a young man and soon afterward locating in Mount Vernon started the first wagon making shop in Jefferson county, which he operated for a number of years with encouraging financial results. An efficient mechanic who always took great pride in his work, his vehicles early acquired such a reputation for excellence that his establishment was taxed to its utmost capacity to meet the demand for them and for many years his wagons had an extensive sale throughout Jefferson county and were preferred to any other on the market.

As evidence of his skill and superior workmanship a number of the Poole wagons are still to be found in various parts of the county and although subjected to the usual rough usage of the farm and highway during the last thirty-five or forty years are still in good condition and bid fair to answer the purposes intended for many years longer.

The maiden name of Mrs. W. H. Poole was Amelia Davidson. Her parents, Hardin and Asynith Davidson, were natives of Ohio, but in an early day moved to Jefferson county, Illinois, locating at Mount Vernon, where they reared a large family of fourteen children, the majority of whom grew to maturity and became well settled in life.

Mrs. Poole, who is a native of Mount Vernon, has borne her husband five children, as follows: Fannie E., Gertrude M., Edith B., Dr. Charles J., of this review, and Ida B.

William Poole, the Doctor's grandfather, was a Tennessean by birth and a cooper by trade. He was of Irish extraction, and is remembered as a good mechanic and a man of great industry and energy whose influence made for the material advancement of his community and the moral good of those with whom he came into contact. He had nine sons, all of whom adopted his own trade, and became good workmen and respected citizens. William Poole came to Illinois a few years after his son, W. H., settled in Jefferson county and spent the remainder of his days in Mount Vernon, where his death occurred in 1890.

Several of the doctor's ancestors were noted for longevity, his great-grandmother, Mrs. Davis, having lived to the remarkable age of one hundred and seven years; she had a sister who was ninety-eight years old at the time of her death and other members of the family were past the allotted three score and ten milestone before called to the other world.

Dr. Charles Judson Poole was born June 27, 1874, in Mount Vernon, Illinois, and received his preliminary education in the schools of his native city, graduating from the high school in the year 1893.

Having decided to devote his life to the noble and humane work of alleviating the suffering of his fellow mortals, he began the study of medicine shortly after finishing his literary education, and in 1896 entered the Medical College at St. Louis, where he prosecuted his studies until completing the prescribed course, receiving the degree of Doctor of Medicine, in the year 1900.

Immediately following his graduation he located at the town of Shiller, where he remained one year, at the expiration of which time he chose the larger and more inviting city of Mount Vernon in which to exercise his professional talents. His subsequent career in this field fully realized his expectations and won for him a conspicuous place among the successful physicians and surgeons of Jefferson county.

Doctor Poole is a close student of medical science and has kept in touch with the latest advancement in his profession, being familiar with the recent discoveries in medicine and skillful in applying what he considers efficacious to the treatment of diseases. He combines many of the characteristics of the ideal family physician, including the pleasing personality and the faculty of gaining the confidence not only of patients but of their friends, also, without which some of the ablest medical men frequently fail to effect cures.

As already indicated his career since locating in the city of his birth has been eminently satisfactory and he now numbers among his patients not a few of his erstwhile boyhood friends and companions and many others who had reached years of maturity when he was but a lad in kilts and knickerbockers.

Doctor Poole avails himself of every opportunity to keep abreast of the times in all matters relating to his chosen calling and to this end holds membership with the Jefferson County Medical Society Southern Illinois Medical Association, the State Medical Association and the American Medical Association, being familiar with the deliberations of these bodies and a regular attendant of those of a local character and a participant in the discussions of the same. He is also identified with several secret fraternal organizations among which are the ancient and honorable orders of Masonry, Knights of Pythias, Red Men, Woodmen, Royal Neighbors, Mystic Workers, Ben Hur and the Knights and Ladies of Security.

Although devoted to his profession the doctor manifests an abiding interest in public and political matters and lends his assistance and influence to all worthy enterprises for the good of his city and the social intellectual and moral welfare of his fellow men. He is a Republican and for some years has been one of the leading workers of his party in Jefferson county, being at this time a member of the County Central Committee and a judicious and trusted adviser in political councils as well as an active and successful campaigner.

Aside from representing his ward in the City Council he has held no elective office nor does he permit aspiration to public position interfere with his professional duties, being first of all a physician and making everything else subordinate thereto.

Doctor Poole was married August 13, 1899, to Miss Grace Daniel, daughter of H. P. Daniel, of Waltonville, the father a pioneer citizen of that town and an ex-soldier of the great Civil war. Doctor and Mrs. Poole are highly esteemed in the social life of Mount Vernon and have many warm friends both in the city and country. They are Baptists in their religious belief and influential members of the church in Mount Vernon, contributing liberally to the material support of the organization and taking an interest in furthering its good work in the community.

One child has been born to them, a daughter by the name of Maereta M., whose date of birth fell on the 25th of April, 1900.
